So ... I love trivia games... and generally when we demo games here at Madhatterr Games we end up focusing on the hundreds of fantasy and sci-fi "shoot-um-up" games that Jim (the Madhatterr) and my husband Randy both tend to enjoy. But, the nice folks over at
North Star Games dropped us a note and said, "what do we have to do to get in on this 'gold cup action' ... we'd love for you to demo and review us" and so, they could hardly turn me down. {Insert evil Marchhare laughter here}
The idea behind
Wits & Wagers is quite simple, you don't have to be a trivia god to win at this game or even to enjoy it... you just have to have a decent knowledge of what your buddies know and the ability to bluff.
And, as if that wasn't reason enough to give this game a whirl, we found a few other things very likable about it...
1) Every turn is YOUR turn! No more waiting five minutes for your buddy to make a lame guess to that one question you knew the answer to. Everyone takes a stab at guessing (or putting down their answer) and then, the betting fun begins.
2) It's NOT your normal trivia game. Sure, you answer questions (interestingly enough, all questions are answered with numbers), but the real twist is that once everyone makes a stab at the answer... players make a wager on which answer they like most to be "the correct answer." Your middle of the road answer might get you your money back while taking a risk and betting on the guy who threw out the most obnoxious answer could win you big or send you home broke. It's all the excitement of betting in Vegas smashed at high speed into the fun you've come to expect from more classic trivia games. Shelf your copy of Trivial Pursuit boys and girls, and resolve to leave it forever doomed to the board-game-old-folks-home...

3) As so often happens in game stores on game nights, random people come in and see how much fun we're having and... want to play too! With
Wits & Wagers we could welcome up to 21 other players! This could be great for clubs, schools, weekends at camp... no more leaving someone sitting out because your trivia game can only let five people play... Wits & Wagers looks at your gaming group and says, "the more the merrier" and boy does it mean it! Things just get wackier and more interesting the more expert "BS-Artists" you happen to have on hand.
Over all this game is easy to learn and easy to love. Personally, I'll be adding a copy to my own game shelf at home where I keep my Apples to Apples and Ticket to Ride (both good games I mean to review eventually for you all here.) If you're looking for a fun game that all your family members & friends will enjoy... I feel pretty safe saying
Wits & Wagers is the game for you. After all, if the guys here at Madhatterr's are willing to play it repeated... it can't be "just a girl thing." Congrats and Thanks
